This ordinary sentence that we regularly hear during parties and causes some discomfort, has a lot of semantic implications. If at first glance, it suggests that we are interested in our interlocutor, it especially allows us to compare socially. “What are you doing? ” Not to say ” how much do you earn? ” or ” am I better placed than you? “. Without mentioning it, this standard formulation refers to work, as if our lives depended only on our jobs. Is this really the case? What to do with our free time when work does not spill over into our private lives? And why is inactivity so synonymous with laziness?
