« The Open Studios aim to offer the opportunity for the public to get to know the practice of the artists in residence at Fondation Fiminco, intending to make artistic processes transparent and accessible, that often remain hidden behind institutional walls.
How can our gaze be shifted from the result to the process, both as a societal principal and in relation to contemporary art? What could such a change of focus away from individual success and the thrive for perfection mean for social coexistence and in the art field? And to what extent are those questions integral when singular practices get embedded in a collective framework, like during a residency?
In order to approach these questions and to enter into direct exchange with the artists, the day will be accompanied by talks between the artists and the curator in residence Anna Marckwald in their studios, providing insights into their practice and contextualizing those works presented.
A film programme in the communal area on the third level of the residency building presents current and older cinematic works of the artists in residence, rising questions of places and displacement. Reflecting the landscapes that surround us – may they be natural or urban- and those we are longing for but can’t access, they stand for the feeling of alienation towards an increasingly artificial environment, the aim to reconnect with nature, the memory of a lost place, the imagination of an alternative utopian surrounding and finally the ever moving existence as artist. Thus, they also address questions of one’s physical body in space: How are individual and collective choreographies connected to the spatial structures they unfold within and to what extent do our bodies incorporate their past and present surroundings, such as the power structures they contain? »
